Day 1 Reflection #Magis

JULY 01, 2014 --- Matthew 8:23-27 THE CALMING OF THE STORM AT SEA

“Jesus got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, “ What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

REFLECTION:

St. Ignatius of Loyola taught us to have a deep and personal faith in God. He showed us that despite the many “cannon ball” experiences we may have in our life, we must always cling to God as our personal Lord and Savior.

Is God asleep?

I often ask the same question especially when swamped with  problems and difficulties in life, at times leading me almost to despair. In times when I feel helpless and hopeless, I often resort to asking the presence of God and his power in my life. In this particular Gospel, Jesus’ majestic command echoes the order of the Creator God whom the winds and the sea obey. When we have faith in God and learn to entrust everything to His will, especially when our “boat” is being tossed, we realize that the tempest before us is nothing to be afraid of. We turn to the Lord who banishes our fear and anxiety. Jesus is “Immanuel”, God who is with us. Trusting in His presence, we have the confidence of the Psalmist who prays, “Whenever I lay down and slept, the Lord preserved me to rise again” (Ps 3:6)With Jesus, even when he seems to be asleep, there is nothing to fear. Because Jesus stands by us, we feel strong and secured, blessed and at peace. After all, before we ask or cry out, God already knows our needs. And God will satisfy the longings of our hearts, clarify our doubts, solve our toughest problems, and heal our serious hurts. God will silence the turbulent storms in our lives.

Reflection Questions:

Who calms your ‘storms’?
Do you entrust your self to God when you experience a ‘storm’ in life?

Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things pass.
 God does not change.
Patience achieves everything.
Whoever has God lacks nothing.
God alone suffices.
Saint Teresa of Avila

St. Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.
